Alex Gitterman edited the Handbook of social work practice with vulnerable and resilient populations (3rd ed., 2014) and co-edited Mental health and social problems: A social work perspective (2010); The encyclopedia of social work with groups (2009); and Mutual aid, vulnerable and resilient populations, and the life cycle, (3rd ed., 2005). He also co-authored The Life Model of social work practice: Advances in theory and practice (4th ed., 2021) and Public health social work in maternal and child health: A forward plan (1986). Alex has published articles and conducted workshops on social work supervision, field instruction, micro practice, group work, and teaching. Alex serves as the General Editor for Columbia University Press series on the subject of Helping Empower the Powerless.

Alex currently serves on the Planning Committee for the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision and has served as President and board member of the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups, and the Council on Social work Education’s Commission on Education and Curriculum Innovation.

Alex serves on the editorial boards of these journals: Clinical Social Work Journal, Clinical Journal of Clinical Supervision, Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment; Social Work with Groups; Social Work in Health Care; Reflections: Narratives of Professional Helping and Teaching in Social Work. Alex’s awards include the Council on Social Work Education Significant Lifetime Achievement Award and the International Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Group’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
